In the summer of 1965, riots broke out in the Watts neighborhood of southern Los Angeles. Over a six-day period, 34 people were killed, 1,032 injured and over 3,438 arrests were made. In 1966, LIFE magazine revisited the site of the worst riots America had ever seen in its history. The photo essay depicting the region’s ‘fearsome street gangs’ however, turned out more like a fashion shoot for dapper style…

This article is such an interesting look at the history of black fashion, quintessential “Los Angeles” style, and how we perceive early gang culture. I’m fascinated with the pride of dress shown by the “dapper rebels” and the dignity presented in their portraits and photos.

Every so often, we find ourselves facing a low moment as a society. Today, our resolve was tested.

Yes, that happened.

No, we can never go back.

The question remains: How can we approach race relations musically without inadvertently creating the 4th-worst song of all-time? (After this, this, and this in case you’re wondering.) I have an idea:

Make the racial draft a real thing. Want to help artists see things from a different viewpoint? Switch it up! Fresh exposure of creative ideas leads to better collaboration between black and white artists, thus decreasing the likelihood that we’ll ever have to suffer through a sonic fisting like “Accidental Racist” again.

On the no-trade list:

Blacks: Kanye West, Jay-Z. both Knowles sisters, ?uestlove, Kendrick Lamar, Phonte, Pharrell, Too $hort, Dr. Dre, the Michael Jackson catalog, both members of Outkast and Project Pat.

Whites: Adele, Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Elton John, Lady Gaga, the Led Zeppelin catalog and Jimmy Buffett.

Ray J, Jaheim, Lil’ Chuckee, Nipsey Hussle, and Machine Gun Kelly’s expiring deal for Jessie Ware, Luke Bryan and the rights to the other half of Drake.
